Chapter Fifteen
Twenty minutes later, I was slowly pushing a cart around H.E.B. without a plan or a purpose, completely lost in my own thoughts. No matter how much I wanted to shake it, I kept thinking about Barryâs death. Of all the bad luck, here I was once again wrapped up in murder. I hated the death and the sadness, but for whatever reason, my mind loved the puzzle part of it all.
If only Iâd been paying more attention at the winery. Would I have been able to stop his death from happening? Would I have been able to see who pushed him? Or was he pushed at all? Maybe he was frightened, maybe he took a wrong step, or lost his balance. He had been drinking quite a bit of wine that day, so it was certainly possible that it was all just a gruesome accident.
But it didnât feel right.
There was too much animosity, too many people with motives to want him dead. No, I was certain that whenever Ryan finally found the answer to who killed Barry Golding, and I didnât doubt he would, that it would be someone from his group.
A butternut squash caught my eye as I was ambling through the produce section, and my cooking brain finally started kicking. I could do a simple roasted chicken with homemade butternut squash ravioli in sage brown butter. It sounded delicious. A little heavy perhaps, but decadent and classy. A dish that was comforting, something I knew all four of us could appreciate at present. I would cut the richness of the main dish with a simple kale salad with a tangy vinaigrette, and fruit for dessert. Watermelons were in season and I grabbed a big green one as I left the produce aisle.
The ravioli was a fussy choice, and a complicated one. But I needed more time to think, and I always did my best thinking in the kitchen. This afternoon I could continue to puzzle through the problems of who killed Barry and how to get more business while I sifted flour and rolled pasta dough.
A few minutes later, as I was searching for a good parmesan for the ravioli, a woman caught my eye. She stood next to a small stand and had samples to offer. She looked a little desperate, and I could understand why. The store was nearly empty at this time of day. As soon as she realized I was looking at her station, she beamed.
âGood afternoon,â she said, her voice like velvet. âWould you like to try a sample?â
I abandoned my quest for the perfect cheese and angled my cart toward her. I was always in the mood for a sample. âSure! Whatâve you got?â
The woman launched into an enthusiastic description of her offering. âI have a delightful truffle infused honey. The honey is local lavender honey, and the truffle is sourced directly from France,â she explained, as she took a small cracker, placed a thin slice of parmesan on it, and drizzled honey over the whole thing.
